Adelaide Hills morning. Only to be greeted by a blast of icy cold water, hey? It’s an instant buzzkill!
Here at RD Plumbing Solutions, we get this call all the time. As a local, family-owned
plumbing service that’s been looking after the lovely people of South Australia for over
10 years, we know exactly what makes your water flow – and what makes it stop!
Don’t panic! We’re here to walk you through the most common culprits behind that cold
water. More importantly, let you know when it’s time to call in one of our trusted,
independent experts.
The Usual Suspects: Why Your Hot Water System Not Working
Hot water system not working? This is perhaps the most common and often the easiest fix for our customers with gas hot water systems. If you’ve got an older storage tank, a sudden gust of wind, or even a heavy downpour, can extinguish the pilot light.
- The Fix: Check your system’s manual (or the instructions often pasted on the
tank itself) for how to safely relight the pilot. If it keeps blowing out, there could
be a deeper issue with the thermocouple or gas supply. Which means it’s time to
call one of our licensed gas plumbers. Remember, dealing with gas is serious
business – never take a risk!

A Tripped Circuit Breaker or Faulty Element (Electric Systems)
For many South Aussie homes, especially those with off-peak tariffs (J-Tariff) and
electric hot water heaters, the lack of hot water could possibly be an electrical issue.
- The Problem: The heating element inside the tank might have failed, or the high
electricity draw could have simply tripped the circuit breaker in your meter box. If
you’re on off-peak power, check your power times – has there been excessive
water use outside of this period? - The Fix: You can check your fuse box or circuit board to see if the ‘Hot Water’
switch is in the ‘Off’ or in the ‘Tripped’ position. If resetting it fixes the problem,
great! But if it trips again instantly, there’s a fault with the element or thermostat,
and you’ll need a one of our qualified plumbers and maybe even an electrician.
A Leaking Hot Water Tank or Pressure Issue
A pool of water around the base of your hot water storage tank is never a good sign. This
is a tell-tale symptom of a leak, often caused by corrosion, especially in older units.
- The Problem: The steel tank has rusted through, or a valve (like the Temperature
and Pressure Relief Valve – TPR or Expansion Control Valve – ECV) has failed.
These valves are essential safety devices that need to be maintained to comply
with South Australian regulations and prevent dangerous pressure build-up. - The Fix: If it’s a failed valve, a repair may be possible. If the tank itself is leaking,
it’s sadly time for a full hot water system replacement. We can assess the
damage and guide you through the process, ensuring your new unit meets all
current SA efficiency and safety standards and is a perfect fit for your home and
lifestyle.

Tempering Valve Problems (South Australian Safety Requirement)
This one is unique to our local regulations. Here in SA, water delivered to your bathroom
taps for personal hygiene (showers, basins) must be no hotter than 50 degrees to
prevent scalding, particularly for children and the elderly. The device that achieves this
is the tempering valve.
- The Problem: Over time, these valves can fail, often due to mineral build-up
from hard water. A faulty tempering valve can either stop the hot water
completely or severely restrict its flow. - The Fix: Tempering valves have a lifespan and must be installed, checked, and
replaced by one of our licensed plumbers. If you’ve got hot water at your laundry
or kitchen sink (where 50 degrees is not a mandate), but not in your shower, the
tempering valve is a strong candidate for the issue!
Running Out of Hot Water (Sizing and Usage)
Sometimes, if your hot water system not working. The system itself isn’t broken; it’s just struggling to keep up with demand!
This is a common issue with a smaller storage unit encounters a growing household
(growing family, teenagers, house guests, new appliances etc.).
- The Problem: Your tank just can’t handle four+ back-to-back showers on a frosty
winter morning! This is often an issue for families moving into a home that was
previously occupied by fewer people. - The Fix: Consider upgrading to a larger storage tank or switching to a high
efficiency continuous flow hot water system (also known as instantaneous).
Continuous flow systems only heat water on demand, meaning you virtually
never run out! Our team can perform a proper sizing assessment for your family
to ensure you get a system that’s just right.

Hot Water System Not Working Bet you’re asking yourself ‘can I fix it?’
Great question, and we love the enthusiasm. Just remember – trying a DIY fix on your hot
water system can void your warranty, and more importantly, be extremely dangerous,
particularly with gas and high-voltage electricity. So honestly – unless you’re attempting
to re-ignite your pilot light on your gas unit – we say a flat out no – don’t risk it! It’s what
were here for.
