From time to time we are all going to need the services of a plumber or another tradesperson, but with so many out there how can you select the right tradie?
Here are RD Plumbing Solution’s top 5 tips to find the perfect tradie for your needs.
Research your selected Tradesperson.
The power of social media and the internet have made it easy for consumers to voice their experiences with business.
When comparing tradespeople, look them up on Google or Facebook and see what others are saying about them.
Also ask a friend or family member for a referral, word of mouth is the best way to select a tradesperson.
Some tradespeople have terrible reviews on line so it’s important to do your research.
Is the Tradesperson Licensed?
All trades in South Australia need to be licensed with the Office of Business & Consumer Affairs. By doing a quick internet search you can determine if your selected tradesperson is licensed to conduct the work you require.
Failure to engage an appropriately licensed tradesperson could result in failure of goods warranty and any future insurance claims being voided.
Make sure you check if your preferred tradesperson is not just licensed, but licensed for the work you want completed. Don’t hire an electrician for plumbing!
You can check licence holders on the SA Government’s website
Does the Tradesperson have insurance?
If the selected trade doesn’t have the relevant insurance you could be left liable for any faulty workmanship.
If a tradie gets injured while working on your home, their insurance protects them, and you.
The tradie’s income protection insurance will cover their losses from their injury.
Most importantly, the tradie’s public liability insurance will cover any damage that occurs to your property during their work. Accidents happen, so make sure your trade is covered.
All Insurance certificates need to be current and valid for the duration of the works. If in doubt, ask the trade to provide their Certificate of Currency for relevant insurance.
Is the Tradesperson clean and tidy?
How is the tradesperson presents themselves is very important. Their appearance says a lot about the quality and standard of work you can expect, and the care they will treat your home with.
Is your tradesperson clean and tidy? Will they take their muddy boots off when entering your home?
The last thing anyone wants is a dirty plumber leaving marks all through a freshly cleaned house.
Ask for upfront pricing.
Always ask for an upfront quote. Beware tradespeople that don’t offer upfront transparent pricing. Some companies have been known to offer complicated fee structures that are confusing and misleading, costing you more in the long run.
The Master Plumbers Association advises you to seek 3 quotes before selecting a plumber. Always try and compare apples with apples, and ask questions if something doesn’t seem right.
Are they an Industry association member?
Refer to the Master Plumbers Association for example to see if your chosen plumber is a member. Not all plumbers are members and those that are have to meet a strict code of practice set out by the association.
RD Plumbing Solutions are proud members of the Master Plumbers Association, and you can find more members at http://www.mpasa.com.au/
